Whale ancestry is a topic that gets mentioned at the NBWM nearly every day. When anyone asks about the funny little bones hanging below our whale skeletons, approximately 2/3 of the distance from the skull, the answer has to involve evolution and the transformation of whales’ ancestors from terrestrial to aquatic mammals. At some point in this 15 million year process that has given us our current cetaceans, the toothed whales developed asymmetrical skulls. An article posted by MSNBC, based on Monday’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences delves into this topic. It has since popped up in several other news sources since then.
