Children’s author Janet Costa Bates will read from her recently published book, Seaside Dream, on Thursday, January 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s Cook Memorial Theater. The free event – part of AHA! and the Whaling Museum’s Communities of New Bedford Lecture Series – is sponsored in part by Baker Books.
Illustrated by Lambert Davis, Seaside Dream, tells a moving and memorable story of a treasured relationship between a child and her Cape Verdean immigrant grandmother. This tender portrait of a close-knit Cape Verdean family focuses on the relationship between Cora and her grandmother. On her grandmother’s birthday, Cora gives her the perfect present, plus the courage to return to Cape Verde.
Seaside Dream is the winner of Lee & Low Books’ New Voices Award, for the window it gives readers on Cape Verdean culture, reflecting a longing that many immigrant families experience for distant places, friends, and family. Kirkus Reviews has praised the book as “a moving portrayal of a grandparent-grandchild relationship as well as a distinctive take on universal aspects of immigration.”
Janet Costa Bates has been recognized by Highlights for Children as an Author of the Month, and her prize-winning fiction has been published in Highlights and Pockets magazine. She lives with her family in Massachusetts and has family ties to the New Bedford area.
