Museum Teen Apprentices Wanted

Not to be confused with the recent notice about the recruiting of new Museum volunteers, we’re looking for ten teens who want to work at the Museum after school and during the summer.   The advertisement for this program is printed below the photo.

Spring/Summer 2010 Apprentices

Build Your Skills as a Museum Apprentice

The New Bedford Whaling Museum is seeking ten motivated juniors and seniors from New Bedford’s high schools to participate in its Apprenticeship Program.  This full year program is spread out over three sessions: Sept-Jan, Feb-May, July-August.  During the school year, the hours are 2:30-5:00pm. During the summer the hours are 10:00am -4:00pm.  Work days are Monday – Thursday.

Students will work in the various departments that comprise the museum, learning about the many people, skills and physical resources needed to keep a museum open and running.  This includes public programming, artifact conservation, research library services, photo archives, and facilities operations.  Apprentices will gain training as junior docents and will create presentations for the public.  They will become part of the team that operates the most comprehensive museum in the world dedicated to the story of global whaling.  In so doing, they will also gain a sense of pride in their city as they grow to understand New Bedford’s important contributions to America’s history and growth as a nation.

Students must be willing to work in a team, able to follow directions, work independently as needed, and have a curiosity that will enable them to participate in a variety of tasks and projects.  This is a paid apprenticeship program ($8/hr) that is geared for students receiving financial assistance for the school’s lunch program.

Applications can be obtained by contacting Robert Rocha, (508) 717-6849 or
