Fig 2. Columbia. Scrimshaw by Manuel Enos depicting a patriotic symbol of the American Republic, rendered in full color on a sperm whale tooth. This and the companion piece are a pair of teeth engraved and inscribed while Enos was first mate in the bark Java of New Bedford in 1862. Length: each 7 1/2 inches (19 cm).
